What Is iTIND?

iTIND stands for Temporary Implantable Nitinol Device. It is a minimally invasive treatment for men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) — such as a weak stream, frequent urination, urgency, and night-time waking — caused by Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), the common enlargement of the prostate that affects most men as they age.

Unlike traditional prostate surgery, iTIND involves no tissue removal, no heat, and no permanent implant. A device made of nitinol (a nickel-titanium alloy) is placed temporarily in the prostatic urethra, reshapes the channel over a few days, and is then removed. It is an attractive middle path for men who want more than medication but less than major surgery.

How iTIND Works (Mechanism)

The nitinol device is placed endoscopically — through the urethra, with no external cuts — into the prostatic urethra. Once in position, it gently expands and exerts controlled pressure at specific points. Over 5–7 days, this creates longitudinal channels by remodelling the bladder neck and prostatic urethra, widening the passage so urine can flow more freely.

After 5–7 days, the device is removed using a quick flexible cystoscopy. The reshaping effect remains, so the improvement in urine flow continues after the device is gone.

Prostate Treatment Without Surgery That Preserves Sexual Function

For many men, the biggest worry about prostate surgery isn’t the operation — it’s the risk to sexual function. Conventional procedures like TURP frequently cause retrograde ejaculation (dry orgasm). iTIND was specifically designed to address this: because it removes no tissue and applies no heat, clinical studies have reported preservation of erectile and ejaculatory function in the large majority of patients, with no new sexual dysfunction caused by the procedure.

This is why iTIND is often the right choice for younger, sexually active men with moderate BPH symptoms who want effective relief without compromising their quality of life.

Who Is iTIND Suitable For? (Indications)

iTIND may be a good option if you are a man who:

  • Has symptomatic BPH with moderate LUTS (weak flow, frequency, urgency, incomplete emptying)
  • Has a prostate size generally in the 25–75 mL range
  • Wishes to preserve sexual and ejaculatory function
  • Wants an alternative to lifelong medication or to more invasive surgery
  • Prefers a short, day-care procedure with rapid recovery

Suitability is always confirmed after a proper evaluation by Dr. Mhaske.

The iTIND Procedure — Step by Step

1. Anaesthesia & cystoscopy: The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, sedation, or a short general anaesthetic, using a cystoscope passed through the urethra — no external incisions.

2. Device deployment: The folded iTIND device is positioned and released in the prostatic urethra, where it begins to expand.

3. Go home the same day: You return home with the device in place. Most patients do not need a urinary catheter.

4. Device removal (Day 5–7): You come back for a quick flexible cystoscopy to remove the device. Most men feel the improvement soon afterwards.

Outcomes — What the Evidence Shows

In appropriately selected patients, iTIND has been shown to produce significant improvement in:

  • IPSS (International Prostate Symptom Score) — a meaningful reduction in urinary symptoms
  • Quality of life — fewer bathroom trips and less day-to-day disruption
  • Maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax) — stronger, easier urination

Clinical studies have reported that these benefits can be sustained for several years (with data extending beyond four years). As with all minimally invasive options, a proportion of patients may eventually need further treatment over time — this is discussed openly during your consultation so your expectations are realistic.

Note: outcomes vary between individuals and can only be estimated after assessing your specific prostate anatomy and symptoms.

Enlarged prostate (BPH)

iTIND vs TURP — How Do They Compare?

Feature iTIND Minimally invasive TURP Gold standard
Tissue removal No Yes
Hospital stay Usually day-care 1–3 days
Recovery Faster Longer
Symptom improvement Moderate Greater
Retrograde ejaculation Rare Common
Durability Good (may need retreatment) Excellent

In short: TURP delivers the most powerful and durable symptom relief and remains the gold standard for larger prostates and severe symptoms. iTIND is best suited to selected patients with moderate BPH symptoms who prioritise preservation of sexual function and a minimally invasive approach. Dr. Mhaske will help you weigh these honestly.

What Patients Say About iTIND Treatment at Dr. Mhaske's Clinic

Frequently Asked Questions — iTIND Treatment

iTIND (Temporary Implantable Nitinol Device) is a minimally invasive treatment for an enlarged prostate (BPH). A small nitinol device is placed in the prostatic urethra for 5–7 days, where it gently reshapes the channel to improve urine flow, and is then removed completely. No tissue is cut or removed and no permanent implant is left behind.

No — preserving sexual function is one of iTIND’s main advantages. Because it removes no tissue and uses no heat, clinical studies report that the large majority of men retain normal erectile and ejaculatory function after the procedure, unlike TURP, which commonly causes retrograde (dry) ejaculation.

Neither is universally “better” — they suit different patients. TURP gives the strongest, most durable symptom relief and is ideal for larger prostates and severe symptoms. iTIND is less invasive, day-care, preserves sexual function, and is best for moderate symptoms. Dr. Mhaske recommends the right option after assessing your prostate and priorities.

The device stays in the prostatic urethra for about 5–7 days. You go home the same day it is placed, then return for a quick flexible cystoscopy to have it removed. Most men are catheter-free during this time.

The procedure is done under local anaesthesia, sedation, or a short general anaesthetic, so it is not painful at the time. While the device is in place, some men feel mild pelvic pressure or urinary urgency, which is temporary and can be managed with simple medication.

iTIND is a premium, technology-based procedure, so the cost depends on the device, anaesthesia, and your individual case, and insurance coverage varies by policy. Contact Dr. Sunil Mhaske at +91 80874 93346 for an accurate estimate.
